Stand on the rim of one of South America's most active volcanoes and peer into a bubbling lava lake 2,847 metres above sea level. The Villarrica Volcano Ascent is the signature mountaineering experience of Chile's Lake District — a thrilling, physically demanding climb that rewards you with otherworldly crater views, sweeping panoramas of snow-capped Andean peaks, and an adrenaline-fueled descent by glissade down volcanic snow slopes.

From the moment you strap on your crampons and ice axe, you are ascending a living, breathing volcano. The 1,500-metre elevation gain takes you through shifting terrain — volcanic scree, compacted snow, and wind-sculpted ice formations — until you reach the summit crater where sulphurous gases rise from the glowing magma below. On clear days, the views stretch from Lake Villarrica to the distant silhouettes of Lanin, Quetrupillan, and beyond into Argentina.

This is a full-day expedition lasting 6 to 8 hours, available year-round, and led by The Red Outdoor Xperience's certified professional mountain guides equipped with full radio communications and an integrated rescue system. All technical mountaineering clothing and equipment is provided — you just need to bring your determination.
